Braumeister Edition #103: Crazy - October 2026
Not the hundred thousandth repeat IPA. This was the ambition Brewmaster Folkert Kupferer had for his Braumeister Edition. After all, a Braumeister Edition is always a chance to try something new.
So he simply "invented" his own beer style.
The result is the CIPA, a Crazy Indian Pale Ale like no other.
What does CIPA mean?
The C stands for Crazy, and that is exactly what the beer is intended to be. A little bit in the vein of a scary movie, with a few things that startle and are not immediately obvious.
The green can represents rummaging through the hops and being allowed to help yourself to one of the most expensive hop chambers without a red pen getting in the way.
By the way, the face on the can has nothing to do with Halloween, even though it fits perfectly in October. It has accompanied Folkert for a long time and also adorns the tank of his old Street Fighter Kawasaki.
At first, it looked really scary until it got a smile. Today it looks almost friendly. 😉
How do you brew a beer that doesn't exist yet?
Before his years at Camba, Folkert was classically inclined, today he has been at home in craft beer for almost a decade. In collaborations, he had the opportunity to work with real experts, including Megan Parisi and Matt Cole, one of the best IPA brewers in the world. He picked up quite a few tricks along the way.
With the CIPA, he is deliberately taking new paths:
Malt: Wheat malt, otherwise very popular in IPAs, is completely omitted by Folkert. Instead, he relies on oat malt. It is mashed intensely, for which he is known in-house. This ensures a high degree of fermentation.
Hops: Only the finest and in sufficient quantities. For this, all hop systems are used, from classic hopping to hot-side whirlpool hopping to the hop gun. Simcoe, Cascade, Krush and Amarillo are in the can and make the CIPA an IPA full of aroma.
Yeast: Here comes the special feature that only a very few breweries in the world can achieve. The CIPA ferments with two yeasts at the same time. Both work in parallel from the beginning instead of being fermented separately and then mixed.
Beer style: Crazy IPA
Alcohol content: 6.3% ABV
Original gravity: 14.7° Plato
Bitterness: 45 IBU
No product of chance
The CIPA was not created at 11:59 p.m. after a very, very large amount of beer. Behind the Crazy IPA is a scientific approach that, Folkert hopes, has a positive effect on the quality.
And who will love the CIPA? It is an IPA that Folkert himself will love. And he is sure that many others will love it too. 🍻
